What Still Lights Me Up?
As we grow older, life brings new seasons and changes, but our capacity for joy, passion, and purpose remains just as important. Sometimes, though, it’s easy to lose touch with the things that once inspired us or gave our days meaning.
Whether it’s spending time with family, exploring a creative hobby, sharing wisdom with others, or enjoying simple pleasures, reconnecting with joy can bring renewed energy and fulfillment to everyday life.
In this session, participants will reflect on what brings them happiness, learn why joy and purpose are vital for health, and explore practical ways to keep those sparks alive. By honoring the things that light us up, older adulthood can be a time not just of reflection, but of growth, creativity, and deep satisfaction.
Why Joy & Purpose Matter in Older Adulthood
Boosts mental health: Older adults who stay connected to passions, hobbies, or meaningful activities experience lower rates of depression and higher life satisfaction (Pinquart, 2002).
Supports brain health: Engaging in activities that bring joy — like music, art, reading, or volunteering — helps keep the brain active and lowers the risk of cognitive decline (Park et al., 2014).
Strengthens resilience: Finding purpose and joy provides emotional strength during life transitions, such as retirement or loss, and helps older adults adapt positively (Ryff, 2014).
Improves physical health: Studies show that older adults who identify and pursue meaningful activities often enjoy better overall health and even increased longevity (Steptoe & Fancourt, 2019).
