Introduction to Emotional Regulation

Young adulthood is a time of transition, new responsibilities, relationships, and pressures. With so much change, emotions can feel overwhelming at times. That’s why learning how to regulate emotions is such a powerful tool for navigating this stage of life.

By understanding that emotions are signals not problems to “fix” young adults can learn to work with their feelings rather than against them. This foundation helps reduce stress, strengthen confidence, and create resilience for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Why Emotional Regulation Matters

  • A core life skill: Emotional regulation — the ability to understand, manage, and respond to feelings in healthy ways — is one of the strongest predictors of well-being in adulthood (Gross, 2015).

  • Impacts mental health: Young adults with strong regulation skills report lower stress, less anxiety and depression, and higher overall life satisfaction (Aldao, Nolen-Hoeksema, & Schweizer, 2010).

  • Shapes relationships & success: Managing emotions effectively helps build healthy friendships, romantic relationships, and work connections. It’s also linked to better problem-solving and decision-making (John & Gross, 2007).

  • Not about “controlling feelings”: Research shows emotional regulation is not about ignoring or suppressing emotions, but about learning healthy strategies like rethinking situations, deep breathing, or choosing constructive actions (Gross, 2014).
